Tesla STEM High School – Lake Washington School District
LPD Engineering served as the civil engineer for Tesla STEM High School, a new 66,000 SF secondary Science Technology Engineering and Math facility for the Lake Washington School District in Redmond, WA. The development was strategically positioned on a 21-acre undeveloped site with second growth, carefully sited to minimize impacts to natural areas. Our comprehensive civil design encompassed water, drainage and sewer utilities, paving, grading, and new site access infrastructure. The project implemented innovative stormwater management through low impact development methods, including permeable concrete and bioretention infiltration areas. LPD provided extensive coordination with King County and the Union Hill Water Association to facilitate the clearing, grading, and drainage permit approvals necessary to meet the accelerated construction schedule for this award-winning facility that accommodates 675 students.
LPD collaborated closely with Integrus Architecture and Absher Construction, who completed the $24.1 million project in 2013 using 158 prefabricated modular units to meet tight construction deadlines. Our team worked diligently with King County to transfer sewer service to the Northeast Sammamish Sewer and Water District (NESSWD), which owned a sewer main adjacent to the project. This service change process required extensive documentation demonstrating that the project met required criteria for expanded sewer service, as well as proposed amendments to the general sewer plan. LPD’s expertise in navigating regulatory requirements and coordinating with representatives of the King County Utilities Technical Review Committee and NESSWD facilitated approval of the amendment, resulting in significant cost savings for the Lake Washington School District while supporting their innovative educational programs in environmental engineering, sustainable design, forensics/psychology, biomedical engineering, and advanced physics/global engineering.
