Seattle Public Library – Green Lake Branch Renovation
Project Narrative:
LPD Engineering provided civil engineering services for the historic renovation of the Green Lake Branch of the Seattle Public Library, a cherished Carnegie library that has served its community since 1910. This landmark renovation project, completed in October 2024, focused on preserving the building’s historic character while implementing critical modern upgrades and enabling the branch to serve as a disaster relief center. In support of this LEED Gold certified renovation that included a seismic retrofit and new fossil-fuel-free HVAC system, LPD’s scope encompassed site improvements supporting new accessibility features, including modifications to accommodate a new basement-level elevator access, new ADA parking stalls, new accessible ramp, associated site access improvements, updated drainage system and water system. The project required careful coordination of grading, paving modifications, water service and drainage system updates while working within the constraints of the building’s landmark status and maintaining its historic integrity. Nearing the end of construction, the library received a grant for Electrical Vehicle charging. LPD provided design for electrical routing, signing and pedestal installation.
The successful completion of this renovation required close collaboration with multiple stakeholders, including BuildingWork architects, the Seattle Public Library, and the City’s Landmarks Preservation Board. LPD Engineering’s expertise in both historic renovation projects and City of Seattle stormwater management requirements enabled us to navigate complex site improvements while respecting the building’s heritage and meeting current code requirements. The project exemplifies our commitment to enhancing community spaces while preserving their historical significance, resulting in a modernized, accessible, and resilient facility that will serve Seattle residents for generations to come
