Puesta del Sol Elementary School – Bellevue School District
LPD Engineering provided comprehensive civil engineering services for Bellevue School District’s replacement Puesta del Sol Elementary School, Washington’s first public Net-Zero PK-12 facility. The project transformed a challenging 9.93-acre site into an innovative 80,000-square-foot educational facility, incorporating state-of-the-art sustainable features while navigating significant environmental constraints. The site’s unique characteristics include proximity to Kelsey Creek, associated floodplain areas, and Chinook distribution zones, requiring careful consideration in the design process. Complex civil engineering challenges included managing stormwater within the Kelsey Creek Drainage Basin, coordinating extensive utility infrastructure, and implementing sophisticated frontage improvements while maintaining residential access.
Working alongside the Sierra Martin Architects-led project team, LPD Engineering’s expertise has been crucial in integrating the ambitious Net-Zero infrastructure, including a 382-kW solar array, 85-well geothermal field, and battery storage system. Our firm’s technical prowess was particularly evident in the successful design and installation of a 100-foot stormwater detention vault beneath an adjacent arterial road, requiring intricate traffic control planning and construction phasing. The project showcases LPD’s ability to balance complex environmental constraints with cutting-edge sustainable design, creating a model for future educational facilities. This Spanish immersion magnet school demonstrates the successful integration of innovative civil engineering solutions with ambitious environmental goals, setting new standards for sustainable school design in the Pacific Northwest.
