Norpoint Park – Parks Tacoma
LPD Engineering provided civil engineering services for the first phase of the transformation of Norpoint Park into northeast Tacoma’s first signature park. This vibrant community space evolved from a simple open field into a dynamic recreational destination. The scope included innovative rain gardens to provide water quality treatment and flow control for over 42,000 SF of impervious surface comprising access drives, parking areas, and pedestrian plazas. Our engineering solutions successfully integrated sustainable design elements including pervious pavement, eco-turf, rain gardens, and support for green roof systems on the restroom facilities—creating a harmonious balance between recreation amenities and environmental stewardship.
Working in close collaboration with Parks Tacoma and the GGLO design team, LPD Engineering’s expertise in sustainable stormwater management was instrumental in creating a park that meaningfully connects the surrounding residential neighborhood with the site’s natural wetland features. Our rain garden designs provide multiple environmental benefits through infiltration, evapotranspiration, plant-uptake, and filtration while serving as educational features within the park landscape. Norpoint Park provides a variety of community recreational spaces featuring a water “spray ground,” zip line, improved skate park, and various play areas—all supported by our carefully engineered stormwater systems that protect and highlight the park’s ecological assets while enhancing its recreational value for residents of all ages.
