Montlake Elementary School Historic Modernization and Addition – Seattle Public Schools
LPD Engineering is providing comprehensive civil engineering services for the renovation and expansion of Montlake Elementary School, a 1924 landmark facility in Seattle’s Montlake neighborhood. The project encompasses the seismic upgrade and renovation of the existing 22,447-square-foot Seattle landmark building and construction of a new 65,000-square-foot, three-story addition, creating a total campus of 80,500 square feet. Working alongside DLR Group and Skanska Construction, LPD’s scope includes site development, utility infrastructure improvements, and stormwater management within the combined sewer basin. The project presents unique challenges in preserving the historic character of the landmark structure while integrating modern sustainable features and replacing portable classrooms with permanent facilities including a new gymnasium and on-site kitchen. LPD’s scope includes complete civil engineering services from schematic design through construction, addressing complex site grading with elevations ranging from 96 to 118 feet, implementing full ADA accessibility throughout the campus, and coordinating extensive utility modifications to support the expanded facility.
In collaboration with Seattle Public Schools and the project design team, LPD Engineering’s expertise has been crucial in navigating the site’s technical challenges and regulatory requirements. The firm’s thorough understanding of Seattle’s infrastructure systems and permitting processes has been essential in developing solutions for water service, combined sewer connections, and stormwater management. When completed in August 2025, the renovated and expanded school will serve 500 K-5 students with modern, accessible facilities that honor the site’s historic significance while incorporating sustainable design features, including provisions for solar panels and high-performance building systems.
