Seward Park Play Area Improvements and Trail Plan
LPD Engineering provided civil engineering services for the Seward Park Play Area Improvements and Trail Plan project with Seattle Parks and Recreation in Seattle, Washington. The project encompassed two major components: a comprehensive assessment and master planning effort for the trail systems throughout the 300-acre Seward Park, and civil engineering design for a new children’s playground at the park entrance. The trail planning work included analyzing existing trail conditions and accessibility, documenting improvement recommendations, and creating an updated trail map with prioritized work plans. For the playground component, LPD donated their professional services including grading design, subsurface drainage systems, stormwater management, pathway construction, and associated site improvements to create safe and accessible recreational facilities. The project was implemented through a phased approach, with design funded by community grants.
LPD Engineering collaborated closely with the landscape architect, Johnson+Southerland, and coordinated directly with the City of Seattle throughout the design and permitting process, while also working with the Seward Park Playground Improvement Foundation and Friends of Seward Park who secured community grant funding. LPD volunteered their engineering expertise to ensure the project’s success, bringing specialized knowledge in site grading, drainage design, and municipal coordination that was essential for navigating Seattle’s permitting requirements and creating lasting improvements. This project represented a significant investment in South Seattle’s recreational infrastructure, revitalizing the park entrance to provide generations of families with safe, accessible play opportunities while enhancing the trail network that serves as a vital community asset for outdoor recreation and environmental education.
