LPD Engineering is providing civil engineering services for Seattle Public Schools’ first net-zero energy school, an 82,000 SF replacement facility on a complex 9.1-acre site. The project presents unique civil engineering challenges including steep slopes, the Thornton Creek riparian corridor, flood-prone areas, and liquefiable soils. LPD’s scope encompasses comprehensive stormwater management systems designed to support the district’s sustainability goals, careful coordination of utility infrastructure including geothermal wells, and extensive site grading to create a terraced campus that enhances connections between indoor and outdoor learning spaces while improving accessibility and safety.
Working closely with DLR Group and Lydig Construction through GC/CM delivery, LPD’s expertise has been instrumental in navigating complex environmental and geotechnical constraints while supporting the project’s ambitious sustainability goals. The site development strategy required creative solutions for managing multiple Environmentally Critical Areas (ECAs), including the integration of the Thornton Creek riparian corridor into the school’s educational program. Upon completion in 2025, this $68M facility will demonstrate how thoughtful civil engineering can support both environmental stewardship and enhanced learning opportunities through careful integration of natural systems and built infrastructure.
